Window Installation Service Phoenix, AZ

Most people who call Superior Replacement Windows about window installation actually need glass replacement, and the two are different jobs at different prices. This page explains which is which, what an installation involves, and what glass is worth specifying in this climate.

Glass Replacement or Window Installation?

Trust Our Professional Windows Installers
If the frame is sound and square, you need glass, not a window. We cut the old unit out, leave the frame in place and set new glass in it. That is most of the work we do, it costs a fraction of a full installation, and for stock single pane and standard sliding door sizes it is often same day. Custom dual pane units take five to seven days because they are built to your measurements.

You need installation when the frame itself has to come out. That means a rotted, racked or corroded frame, an opening being resized, a remodel or addition, or a change of window type. A glazier can tell you which one you are looking at in a single visit, and we will say so plainly if the cheaper job is the right one.

More detail on the glass side: dual pane window repair, single pane replacement and sliding glass door repair.

What a Window Installation Involves

The opening does most of the deciding. Framing is either new king studs, the existing studs, or a combination of jack and king studs, and which one is available depends on the wall and on code.

Openings wider than about three feet need temporary support while the wall is open, until a header carries the load. Before anything is cut we check what is running through the wall, because plumbing, wiring and ductwork all live in the same cavity and finding them late is what turns a one-day job into a three-day one.

Once the opening is ready the rest moves quickly: set the unit, shim it level and square, flash and seal the exterior, seal the interior, then check that it opens, closes and locks the way it should. On a stucco elevation the exterior finish has to be cut back and made good, and that is usually the part that decides how long the job takes.

Glass Worth Specifying in Phoenix

Low-E is the decision that matters, and the side it goes on matters as much as having it. A Low-E coating is a microscopically thin metallic layer on one of the inner faces of a sealed unit. It is spectrally selective: it lets visible light through and reflects infrared. In Phoenix it belongs on surface #2, the inboard face of the outer pane, so it rejects solar heat before it ever reaches the cavity. In a cold climate the same coating goes on surface #3 to hold indoor heat in. That is the opposite of what a Phoenix house wants, and getting it the wrong way round costs you every summer.

The number to look at is SHGC, not U-factor. Solar Heat Gain Coefficient is what controls a Phoenix cooling bill. ENERGY STAR’s Southern zone threshold is an SHGC of 0.23 or lower with a U-factor of 0.32 or lower, and the 2021 IECC requires an SHGC of 0.25 or lower in climate zone 2, which is us. U-factor still matters for winter nights and for how the glass feels to stand next to, but it is not what a Phoenix summer turns on. Ask for both numbers on anything you are quoted.

Thickness. Individual lites in a residential unit are typically 1/8 to 1/4 inch, going to 3/8 inch on large or exposed openings. A finished dual pane unit, two lites plus the sealed spacer, is usually around 3/4 inch overall.

Safety glazing. Doors, glass next to a door, large panes low to the floor, and anything at a tub, shower or stairway need safety glazing. Tempered is the usual answer, but laminated meets the same requirement and can be cut on site.

Obscure and patterned glass for bathrooms and anywhere else privacy matters, and bronze or gray tints where you want to cut glare as well as heat.

Is Triple Pane Worth It Here?

Usually not. A triple pane unit cuts conductive heat transfer by roughly 40 to 50% against a comparable dual pane unit, which sounds good until you remember that conducted heat is not what makes a Phoenix house hot. Most of the summer load arrives as solar radiation straight through the glass, and that is controlled by the coating, not by adding a third pane. Triple pane also costs more to buy and more to replace when a unit breaks or a seal fails.

For most Valley homes the same money goes further on a good low-solar-gain dual pane package, with exterior shading on the west and east elevations that take the harshest low-angle sun.

Hiring a Glazier

Windows are a large enough purchase to be worth a few questions before you commit. The ones we would ask:

How long have you been doing this, and can I see work you have finished? Glazing is a trade you learn on the job.

What is the SHGC and U-factor of what you are quoting? Anyone specifying windows in Phoenix should be able to answer without checking.

Do you carry glass on the truck? It is the difference between same day and next week on stock sizes.

What does the warranty cover, and is it in writing? Our own installation work carries a lifetime limited warranty on our workmanship, for as long as you own the property, and the glass we supply is warranted against defect.

How Much Does Window Installation Cost?

Glass replacement is priced from a list. Full window installation is not, and we would rather say so than publish a number that turns out to be wrong.

For glass in an existing frame: $175 to $325 for single pane up to ten square feet and $300 to $550 between ten and thirty. $300 to $900 for a dual pane unit, glass only, in an existing frame. $375 to $650 for tempered sliding door glass in a stock size, $550 to $950 for a dual pane door panel.

A full installation depends on the opening, whether the frame comes out, whether the opening is being resized, what the wall is made of, how the exterior is finished and how the window is reached. Those swing the price too far for a range to mean anything, so we measure and quote on site. The quote is free and there is no obligation.

We install for residential and commercial property across the Phoenix area and the cities of Maricopa County. Our shop is at 4202 E Elwood St in Phoenix, just south of Sky Harbor.
