Rio Verde Service Area:
About the Rio Verde Service Area
Rio Verde, Arizona, is a master planned community northeast of Scottsdale, AZ. It is not a city or a town, but instead, a census-designated place, also called a CDP. This does not prevent the community from having a rich history. Its history is a vast departure from its modern-day reputation as a golfing Mecca.
Rio Verde began as a small community of farmers that settled the land in the late 1800s. They made their living there by growing hay and alfalfa for the US Army camp of Fort McDowell. The camp existed from 1865 until 1890 and is now the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation. Frank Asher and William Moore bought most of the small farms and consolidated them into the Box Bar Ranch. The Moores eventually bought out the Ashers and changed the name of the Box Bar Ranch into Moore Bros Cattle Co., abandoning farming for cattle ranching. The Moore’s finally sold the cattle business and the ranch to Page Land & Cattle Co. They, in turn, sold the land in 1970 to Rio Verde Development.
Rio Verde’s time as a farming and cattle ranching community would finally come to an end in 1973 when it started to be converted into a master-planned community. A large part of the planned community would be its two famous championship golf courses designed by Tom Lehman. The openness maintained in the community is reminiscent of its agricultural beginnings, which are now enhanced with modern amenities and a host of outdoor activities. The openness lends area architecture to include glass provided by Superior Replacement Windows, and many renovation projects have been completed to allow area property owners to enjoy the expansive views.
