How El Mirage Began
El Mirage began as a settlement of farm workers who were not permitted to live in the surrounding towns, and who built their own community on the west bank of the Agua Fria. It incorporated in 1951.
Luke Air Force Base sits immediately to the west and has shaped the city for eighty years, both as an employer and in what can be built under the flight paths. The El Mirage Motel, built in 1937 on what was then the main road north, stood for decades as the last trace of the original roadside settlement before it was demolished.
