Three things, and they hit different models differently.
Heat is the one that breaks glass. Park a Camry uncovered through an August afternoon and the outer ply climbs far above the temperature of the cabin. Dust is the slow one. A few monsoon seasons of blown grit leave the outer surface pitted, and pitting turns oncoming headlights into a wall of glare. Nothing about that glass is cracked. Plenty of people replace it anyway, and on a night commute we would agree with them.
Is Your Chip Repairable, or Is It a Replacement?
Two measurements decide it and one rule overrides both.
The measurements: resin holds in a chip up to about the size of a quarter, and in a crack up to about the length of a dollar bill. Larger than that, the repair looks fine in the driveway and reopens the first time the glass gets worked hard by heat.
The rule that overrides them is position. If the damage sits in the band of glass you look through while driving, it gets replaced no matter how small it is, because cured resin leaves a slight optical smear and a smear in that spot is worse at 70mph than the chip ever was. What Happens If You Leave the Crack Alone?
It spreads, and that is the least of it.
A windshield glued into the body is a structural component. In a rollover it holds a meaningful share of the roof load, and on the passenger side it is the surface the airbag inflates against on its way to the occupant. A crack running through that bond line means the glass is no longer doing either job at full strength. Nobody notices until the day it counts.
There is a nearer-term cost too. Cracked glass across the driver’s field of view is grounds for a citation in Arizona, and a crack that reaches the edge of the windshield will keep traveling every time the car heats and cools. Once it touches the perimeter, the repair option is gone and the price moves from a chip fill to a full replacement.

Which Safety Sense Generation Is in Your Toyota?
This is the question that decides the shape of the job, and it is not answered by the model name.
Toyota Safety Sense is not a single system. TSS 2.5 and TSS 3.0 use different cameras with different calibration routines behind them, and the tolerances Toyota specifies are tight. A 2019 RAV4 and a 2023 RAV4 wear the same badge and are two different appointments.
That is the piece of information the VIN gives us that the year and the trim level do not. It is also why we would rather spend two minutes looking your car up than quote you a number that changes later.
Does Toyota Safety Sense Need Recalibrating After New Glass?
Yes, on every Toyota carrying the forward camera. That camera is fixed to the windshield, so its view of the road is defined by where the glass sits. Take the glass out and the aim leaves with it.
Dynamic calibration takes 45 to 60 minutes. Static calibration takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Your Safety Sense generation determines which procedure applies, and Toyota wrote that procedure, not us.
Budget $300 to $600 for a standard calibration. Two situations push it past that: glass fitted as part of collision repair, and vehicles with major body modification or a complicated driver assistance package. Those become multi-system calibrations at $500 to $1,200 or more, and we say so at the quote stage.

What Grade of Glass Are We Quoting You?
