Does a Silverado Need Calibration After a Windshield Replacement?
If the truck has Chevy Safety Assist, yes. Forward collision alert, lane keeping and the following distance indicator all work off a camera clamped to the back of the windshield, and pulling that windshield out leaves the camera aimed at nothing in particular.
Dynamic calibration takes 45 to 60 minutes. Static calibration takes 1.5 to 2 hours. GM leans heavily toward the dynamic route, which we get into below.
Price it at $300 to $600 for a standard calibration. It climbs when the glass is going in behind collision repair, when the body has been modified, or when the truck carries a layered driver assistance package. At that point we are calibrating several systems against each other rather than aiming one camera, and those jobs run $500 to $1,200 or more.
Why Does GM Want Road Time Instead of a Target Board?
Because that is how the system learns. Chevy Safety Assist calibrates primarily on the move, with the truck in a learning state for up to 30 minutes of qualified driving before the camera settles on its reference.
Qualified is the operative word. The drive needs painted lane markings the camera can lock onto, a steady speed, and no stop-and-go crawling. Do it on Central Avenue at 5pm and the truck learns nothing.

How Hard Is Phoenix on a Truck Windshield?
Harder than on the sedan parked next to it, for two reasons.
Heat cycling. A truck that has sat on an open site since seven in the morning has glass hot enough to burn a hand. Climb in, run the air conditioning flat out, and the inner surface drops while the outer one stays where it was. Laminated glass tolerates that gradient until there is a chip somewhere in it, and then it doesn’t.
Stone strikes from below. Gravel yards, dirt approach roads and the permanent roadwork along the Loop 101 and Loop 202 all throw rock. Truck damage tends to land in the lower third and out toward the edges, and edge damage has nothing around it to stop a crack from running.
Put the two together and a chip picked up in April becomes a full-width crack by the end of June. That is the pattern we see over and over on work trucks.

Often, and it is worth asking before you assume otherwise. If the chip is under quarter size, outside the driver’s sweep and away from the perimeter, resin fills it and the glass stays in the truck. Same for a crack shorter than a dollar bill.

Which Glass Grade Goes Into a Chevy?
Three grades fit, and we tell you which one is in the quote. OEM carries the GM mark. OEE is built to the same drawing without the branding. Aftermarket comes from an independent manufacturer.
On trucks, all three see regular use and the decision usually comes down to who is settling the bill and what the policy permits.
